How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire T5549 which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission just above the flywheel ring This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T5549 The ECU then uses this information to control the boost fuel and timig It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 error message This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors G4 or G40 It is a little tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector and they all have different functions The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor When the sensor is operational it should be reading about 1000 ohms If youre experiencing issues with this component look for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay 2 Injectors Yesterday when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power It was as if the engine was running out of gas Or my injectors werent firing In the morning i removed the spark plugs Three were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks the 3 with gazoline jump out The fourth one remains shut I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 1430 and 4855 I found 0ohm Im assuming that the issue is somewhere else I also tried to reset the PID without success The car will start when the G28 is disconnected but it works fine when the G28 connected However audi car keys occurs at higher RPM The coolant sensor G62 even when unplugged still shows an ice temperature of 49c I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0 Im not sure what to do I believe that Ive eliminated everything else Im afraid i may have missed something Please let me know should you have any suggestions TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and works on the 80100200 UrS and RS2 vehicles It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store Testing them is easy put your DMM in resistance mode and measure between pins 1 with the bump on the connectors side up and 2 2nd from left on the black end of the connector They must be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines have an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors etc It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this If you have a problem with either of these the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shutdown The signs of a failing G28 sensor are an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal andor a misfire when youre in gear It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs Theyre cheap and easy to find especially if theyre an Bosch sensor like ours You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a great option 5 Tachometer A failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of issues in your car It is a crucial part of your Audis transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicles crankshaft is turning This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring It transmits a signal via gray wire to ECU pin T5549 The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost as well as timig It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster You can check for sensor failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer You can also verify continuity between pin T5549 of the ECU and pin T6a1 of the instrument cluster trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and pin T26a12 You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points This is a common feature across the Audi 80100200RS2 model ranging beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS An and 1995 RS2 DU You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards
