How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T5549 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T5549 through a grey wire The ECU utilizes this information to regulate the amount of fuel and boost It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 This means that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumped chain link in the upper chain The code wont appear without the additional information provided by other sensors G4 or G40 Its a bit tricky to test as there are various pins on the connector and each has its own functions The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor It should read around 1000 ohms if the sensor is at full operation Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing problems with this part 2 Injectors Yesterday while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power It was like the engine had run out of gas Or my injectors were not firing I pulled out the spark plugs this morning 3 were soaked in gasoline and the fourth was dry I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I turn the engine on without sparks the three with gazoline jump right out The fourth one remains closed I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 1430 and 4855 I got 0ohm I assume that the problem is somewhere else I also tried to reset the PID without success The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in However the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM The coolant temperature sensor G62 shows the wrong temperature of 49c even if I unplug it I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is 0 Im not sure what to do I feel like ive pretty much eliminated everything else Im concerned that i may have missed something If anyone has any suggestions please chime in TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and both work on the 80100200 UrS and RS2 vehicles It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store It is easy to test them simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 with the bump at the connectors end facing up They must be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors etc It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this If either of these sensors go badly you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal andor an unfire when in gear If you are experiencing any of these issues it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement The good thing is that they are very cheap and easy to find especially if youre looking at an Bosch model which is what ours are If you prefer GMs version of this part would be a good option 5 talks about it failing engine speed sensor could be the cause of many problems in your car It is a crucial part of the Audis transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicles crankshaft is rotating If the sensor fails it can cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the cars components The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T5549 through an uncolored wire The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel timig and boost and also sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity of the sensor to the tachometer Additionally you can examine the continuity between pins T5549 of the ECU and pin T6a1 of the instrument cluster trace 79trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and pin T26a12 You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas This is a typical component across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU Good ones could be available in wrecking yards
