Power Mobility and Safety Concerns Power mobility improves participation in daily activities and recreation for those in longterm care However the devices can also create safety concerns that need to be addressed Instead of excluding residents who have certain diagnoses from power mobility option that could be considered risk management prejudicial most participants opted to adopt a teleological approach and allow all residents to try out the device Mobility A power mobility device allows those who are unable to move around their community or home and engage in daily activities that are otherwise not accessible to them These devices cause danger not only to the person using them but also to other people who share their space or the space Therapists in occupational therapy must assess each clients safety needs to provide the most appropriate recommendations for powered mobility In green power scooters that was conducted by OTs at three residential care facilities of the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority qualitative interviews were conducted with residents to evaluate their power mobility use The aim was to create a framework for clientcentred power mobility prescribing The results revealed four main themes 1 the meaning of power mobility 2 learning the rules of the road 3 red flags concern about safety and 4 solutions Power mobility can dramatically improve the quality of life for those who are mobilitychallenged by giving them the opportunity to participate in a range of daily living activities both at home and in the community Brandt 2001 Evans 2000 Participation in selfcare as well as leisure and productive occupations is essential for physical and mental health for older adults and for a lot of people with progressive diseases power mobility is a way to continue participating in these important activities It was considered unacceptable by the participants to remove a wheelchair from a residents home because it would alter their lifes narrative and direction and stop them from engaging in the same things that they had prior to their illness worsened This was particularly applicable to those in Facility 1 who were only able use their power chairs for a brief period and now relied on others to push them Another potential solution was reducing the speed at which residents drove their chairs but this could have raised issues such as privacy concerns and the impact on other residents in the community In the end removing a residents chair was considered the most drastic and least preferred solution to safety concerns Safety Power mobility allows people with disabilities to move more freely and take part in a wider variety of activities and even run errands With the increased mobility comes an increased risk of accidents These accidents could result in serious injuries for some This is why it is important to think about the safety of your client before suggesting that they use power mobility First consider determining if your client can safely operate their power chair or scooter This could involve an examination of the physical by a doctor or occupational therapist or a mobility specialist based on the nature of your clients impairment and their current health In some cases your client will require an automobile lift to be capable of loading and unloading the mobility device at their workplace home or community Another aspect of safety is knowing the rules of the road This includes sharing space with other wheelchair users pedestrians and the drivers of buses or cars This was a theme that was mentioned by the majority of participants in the study Some people learnt to drive their wheelchairs on sidewalks instead of driving in crowded areas or on curbs unless the wheelchair was specifically made for this purpose Others drove slower and kept an eye out for pedestrians in an area that was crowded The final and least preferred option was to remove the chair of a person which was seen as twofold punishment that would result in losing mobility independently and preventing access to facilities and community activities Diane and Harriet among others were among those who had their chairs taken away The participants also suggested that residents family members and staff members be informed about the proper use of power mobility This could include teaching the basics of driving such as the correct side to walk on in the hallway encouraging the residents to practice driving techniques when they go outside and helping them be aware of how their actions affect the mobility of other people FollowUp A device that is powered by electricity can profoundly affect the ability of a child to function and participate in life However little research has been done on the experience of children who are learning to use this device This study employs the prepost method to investigate the impact of 6 months of use using one of four early power mobility devices on the children in school with severe cerebral palsy CP We conducted qualitative interviews with 15 parents along with pediatric occupational and physical therapists Thematic analysis revealed three main themes The first theme Power to move explained the ways that using an electric device impacted more than just the childs locomotor abilities Learning to drive a power mobility device can be a transformative emotionally charged journey for the participants The second theme Theres no such thing as any cookbook revealed that the process of learning to use the power mobility device was an individual process that developed over time in a cycle Therapists were required to determine what was feasible based on each childs abilities and needs During the training phase and after therapists had to be patient with children and parents Therapists and parents alike emphasized the need to assist families celebrate their achievements and solve problems associated with the training process Finally the third themeShared space The study explored the ways in which using devices that power us can have an impact on the lives of other people and their interactions The majority of participants in this study believed a person must be mindful of other people when using their mobility device This was especially relevant when driving on public roads A few participants also mentioned that theyve encountered instances where anothers property was damaged through the use of a power mobility device or in which an individual was injured by a driver who failed to yield rightofway The results of this study indicate that power mobility and socialization training for preschoolers with CP can be carried out in certain classroom settings Future research should be focused on the effects of training and results of this kind of intervention with young children with CP This will hopefully lead more standardized training protocols for children who have CP
