How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor The sensor is situated at the top of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It sends a message to the ECU via the grey wire T5549 and then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T5549 through the grey wire The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors in the right way If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft arent in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing However the error code wont be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors G4 and G40 Its a bit tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor When the sensor is fully functional it should read approximately 1000 ohms Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part 2 Injectors Yesterday when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive reduction in power It was as if the engine had run out of gas Or my injectors werent firing I pulled out the spark plugs this morning 3 were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean I put tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks the ones that have gazoline pop right out The 4th one stays shut I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 145530554855145548 i get zero Ohm I assume that the problem is elsewhere I also tried to reset the PID without success The car will start when the G28 is disconnected but it runs fine with the G28 connected However audi a3 key replacement near me occurs at higher RPM The coolant sensor G62 even when unplugged still shows a temperature of 49c I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0 Im not sure what to do I feel like ive pretty much ruled everything else out But i am afraid I may have missed something If anyone has any suggestions please share them TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80100200 UrS and RS2 vehicles You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store Test them out to do just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 with the bump on the connectors side up and 2 2nd from the left on the black connectors end They must be infinite ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines have an ECU that needs to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors etc In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If you encounter a problem with either of these the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could cause an engine shut down A failing G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal andor a misfire while in the gear If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement The good thing is that they are very affordable and easily accessible especially when youre looking at a Bosch unit which is what we have Alternatively the GM version of this part is also a good option 5 Tachometer A failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car It is an important part of the transmission in your Audi since it sends information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the engine is spinning If this sensor fails it can affect the performance of the transmission and the rest of the cars components The G5 engine sensor is located at the edge of the transmission over the flywheel ring It sends signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T5549 The ECU is then able to process this signal to control the flow of fuel timig and boost and then sends it on to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer Additionally you can verify continuity between pin T5549 of the ECU and pin T6a1 of the instrument cluster trace 79trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and pin T26a12 You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points This is a standard part across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards
