How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor The sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T5549 which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission directly above the flywheel ring The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T5549 The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel timig and boost It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing The code wont appear without the additional information provided by other sensors G4 or G40 It is a little tricky to test as there are different connector pins and each has its own functions The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor When the sensor is fully functional it should read around 1000 ohms If youre experiencing issues with this part check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay 2 Injectors Yesterday as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant decrease in power It was like the engine was running out of gas Or my injectors werent firing In the morning i removed the spark plugs 3 were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks the 3 with gazoline jump right out The 4th one stays shut I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 1430 and 4855 I got 0ohm Im assuming the issue is somewhere else I also tried to reset the PID with no success The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM The coolant sensor G62 even if it is not plugged in shows a temperature of 49c I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is zero Im not sure what to do I think Ive ruled everything else out But i am afraid I might have missed something Let me know should you have any suggestions TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor The GMstyle sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store It is easy to test them simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 with the bump at the connector end facing up They should be infinite Ohms 4 ECU The ECU of our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY ADU engines needs to be aware of the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors etc To accomplish this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If you are experiencing issues with either of these the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal andor a misfire in gear If you experience any of these problems it is likely your sensor is going bad and should be replaced Theyre inexpensive and easy to locate particularly if theyre a Bosch unit like ours You can also choose the GM version of this part is also a good option 5 replacement key for audi a4 failing engine sensor could cause a variety of issues in your car Its an essential component of your Audis transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the cars crankshaft is rotating If the sensor fails it could affect the performance of the transmission and the other cars components The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T5549 through a grey wire The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate fuel timig and boost and also transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer Additionally you can examine the continuity between pins T5549 of the ECU and pin T6a1 of the instrument cluster trace 79trace 79 and between pin T6a1 and pin T26a12 You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas This is a standard component across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards
