How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor In this video Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor The sensor is located at the edge of transmission above the flywheel gear It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T5549 then to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster 1 Engine Speed Sensor The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T5549 through the grey wire The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel timig and boost It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly If this sensor fails the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft arent in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain However the error code wont appear on its own without additional information from other sensors G4 and G40 It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor When the sensor is fully functional it should read around 1000 ohms If youre having issues with this part check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay 2 Injectors Yesterday while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors arent firing any more Today i pulled out the spark plugs three were drenched in gazoline the fourth was dry I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks the 3 with gazoline jump out The fourth one remains closed I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 1430 and 4855 I got zero ohm I assume that the problem is somewhere else I also tried to reset the PID without success The car will start when the G28 is disconnected but it works fine when the G28 plugged in However the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM The temperature sensor for coolant G62 shows the wrong temperature of that is 49c even after unplugging it I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero Im not certain what to do but i think ive pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities Im worried that i might have missed something If anyone has any suggestions please share them TIA 3 Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor The GMstyle transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80100200 UrS and RS2 vehicles You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store It is easy to test them just put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 with the bump on the connectors edge facing upwards They must be infinite Ohms 4 ECU Our 20vt turbo 3B AAN ABY and ADU engines are equipped with an ECU that must know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injector for example In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 If either of these goes wrong you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal andor an unfire when in the gear If you experience any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and requires replacement Theyre cheap and easy to find especially when theyre an Bosch model like ours Alternately GMs version this part would be an option 5 Tachometer A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your vehicle It is a crucial part of your Audis transmission as it sends information to the ECU about how the cars crankshaft is rotating This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear It sends a signal to the ECU at pin T5549 via an uncolored wire The ECU then processes the signal to control the flow of fuel timig and boost as well as transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer between the ECU pin T5549 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a1 trace 79trace 79 as well as between T6a1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a12 You should see approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points audi keys replacement cost thekeylabcouk is a standard part that is found across the Audi 80 100 200 UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good parts could be found in wrecking yards
