Pragmatic Experience How Pragmatic Experience Can Affect Your Interpersonal Relationships Pragmatism is a useful characteristic in a variety of professional fields When it comes to interpersonal relationships however people who are pragmatic can be difficult to deal with for their family and friends The case exemplars in this article illustrate a strong synergy between pragmatism and patientoriented research POR Three fundamental principles of research are discussed to demonstrate the inherent connection between these two paradigms 1 Focus on the facts Rather than being strict in adherence to rules and procedures pragmatic experience is about how things occur in the real world For example If a craftsman puts his hammer in a nail and it is thrown out of his hands but he doesnt head back down the ladder to retrieve it instead the worker simply moves to the next nail and continues to work This method isnt just practical but it also makes sense from an evolutionary perspective after all its far more efficient to move to the next project instead of trying to get back to the point at which you lost grip on the hammer The pragmatist method is especially beneficial for researchers who are patientoriented as it enables a more flexible research design and data collection This flexibility allows a more comprehensive and personalized approach to the research as well the ability to adapt to the research questions that develop during the course of the study Additionally pragmatism is the ideal framework for research that is patientfocused because it embodies the fundamental principles of this type of research collaborative problemsolving and democratic values The pragmatist method also works well with the pragmatic approach The pragmatic method is a method that blends qualitative and quantitative methods to gain a better understanding of the subject under investigation This method can lead to an open and accountable research process which can be used to help inform decisions in the future The pragmatic approach is a powerful tool to examine the effectiveness of patientoriented POR However there are important flaws in this method The primary issue is that it puts practical outcomes and consequences over moral considerations which could result in ethical dilemmas A pragmatic approach may lead to ethical dilemmas if it ignores longterm sustainability This can have serious implications in certain circumstances Third pragmatism is a trap since it fails to consider the nature and the essence of reality While this isnt an issue in the context of empirical issues such as studying physical measurements it could be a danger when applied to philosophical questions such as morality and ethics 2 Take the proverbial plunge Try to apply pragmatism in your everyday life and make decisions that are in line with your goals and priorities Try to integrate pragmatism into your everyday life by making choices that align with your goals and your priorities Gradually build your confidence by taking on more and more complex challenges You will build a positive record that will demonstrate your ability to act with confidence when faced with uncertainty You will soon discover it easier to embrace the pragmatism that you have been accustomed to throughout your life Experience plays three roles in pragmatist thought critical preventative and enriching Lets examine each one in each case The first function of the experience is to demonstrate that a philosophical position is of no value or significance For example children may believe that there are invisible gremlins living in electrical outlets and will bite them if they are touched The gremlin hypothesis may seem to be true since its consistent with a childs naivety and produces results Its not an argument to deny the existence of grumblers Pragmatism can also be a tool to prevent problems as it can help us avoid common philosophic mistakes like beginning with dualisms reducing reality to what we know and ignoring the context intellectualism and what is real with what we know It is evident that the gremlin theories do not work in any of these ways when viewed through a pragmatist perspective In the end pragmatism can be an excellent framework to conduct research in the realworld It enables researchers to be flexible in their investigation techniques For instance two of our doctoral dissertations required us to engage with participants to discover the ways they engage in organizational processes that could be undocumented and informal Our pragmatic method led us to employ qualitative methods like participant observation and interviews to investigate these nuances Pragmatism can help you make better decisions and enhance your life Its not an easy feat to attain but with a bit of practice you will learn to trust your gut and make decisions based on practical consequences 3 Selfconfidence is an important thing to have The virtue of pragmatism could be beneficial in many aspects of life It can help people overcome hesitation and help them achieve their goals and make sound professional decisions 슬롯 s a characteristic that has its own disadvantages This is especially the case in the realm of interpersonal relationships It is not uncommon for people who are more pragmatically inclined to not understand their coworkers or friends hesitate Pragmatically inclined individuals tend to take action and think only about what works not what is likely to work Consequently they often have difficulty recognizing the potential dangers of their choices When a craftsman is hitting a nail into scaffolding and the hammer slides from his hands he might not be aware that he could lose his balance Instead he will continue working assuming that the tool will fall back into place when he moves it While there is a certain degree of pragmatism inherent however it is not impossible for even thoughtful people to develop the ability to be more pragmatic To achieve this they need to stop overanalyzing their decisions and focus on the basics This can be accomplished by gaining confidence in their intuition and not needing assurance from others It is also a matter to practice and get into the habit of acting immediately when a decision needs to be made In the end it is crucial to be aware that there are certain kinds of decisions that the pragmatic approach will not always be the most appropriate In addition to practical consequences the pragmatism approach should not be used as a metric for morality or truth Its because pragmatism doesnt work when it comes to ethical issues It does not provide the basis for determining whats true and whats not If someone wants to pursue a higher level it is important to consider their financial situation their time constraints and the relationship between work and life This will help them decide whether pursuing a degree is the best choice for them 4 Trust your gut Pragmatists are renowned for their ingenuity and risktaking approach to life While this is an excellent trait for character however it can be difficult in the interpersonal realm Pragmatists have a hard time understanding the hesitation of others which can cause them to misunderstand and cause conflict particularly if they are working together on the same project There are however some ways you can make sure your pragmatic tendencies dont get in the way of working effectively with other people Pragmatists are more focused on outcomes than on logic or theoretical arguments In the sense that if something works and is true it is regardless of the method by which it was arrived at This is what John Dewey referred to as radical empiricism a method that seeks to provide significance and value a place in the experience in the whirling sensations of sensory data This type of inquiry philosophy encourages pragmatic people to be open and creative when examining the processes of organizational change For example certain researchers have discovered that pragmatism is an appropriate methodological framework for qualitative research into organizational change since it recognizes the interconnectedness of knowledge experience and action It also examines the limitations of knowledge as well as the importance of social contexts such as culture language and institutions This is why it is a proponent of political and social liberation projects such as feminism ecology and Native American philosophy Alexander 2013 Another area where pragmatism can be useful is its approach to communication Pragmatism emphasizes the connection between thought and action This has led to the development of discourse ethics which is designed to help build a true communication process that is free of distortions caused by power and ideologies Dewey would surely have been awed by this Despite its limitations pragmatism is an important factor in philosophical debate Scholars from diverse disciplines have used it The pragmatism of Chomskys theories of language and Stephen Toulmins application of argumentative analysis are two examples It also has influenced fields like the study of leadership organizational behaviour and research methodology
